Porto Cristo and Deep Blue Seas

Before exploring Palma and admiring the Mallorcan countryside, I first reached east for a much-needed me-time.

Three days with a book in one hand, cocktail in the other and a bit of discovering in between.

Visiting in April had its advantages - there weren't that many tourists around and beaches were empty. But the downside was the changeable weather. I was keen to make the most of it regardless.

I woke up early ready to catch the sun rays peaking through the clouds.

I am not an early riser but it certainly felt great to walk 5k so early in the morning. I wish I could push myself to do that more often.

I chose to stay in Porto Cristo, a fishing town on the east coast for its beautiful blue-green sea, golden sand beaches, rocky cliffs, caves, and harbors. Very quiet, perfect for those that seek peace and tranquility like I did.

There are two popular theories on how the town got its name - first comes from a legend that in 1260AD, a fishing boat carrying a crucifix was washed ashore. The other is that two oxen who were carrying an icon of Christ to Palma, stopped there and refused to move further. The icon stayed, and the town was renamed in its honour.

I found a great little restaurant with the most incredible view of the shimmering deep blue sea.

Perfect place to relax and put your feet up.

Porto Cristo is famous for Caves of Drac and Caves of Hams, one of the biggest attractions on the island. Caves of Drac, known as Dragon Caves due to the fact the dragon features in many Mallorcan fairytales as a symbol of strength.

Dusk was falling slowly, so I made my way to the beach to catch the sunset. Magical golden hour and dazzling light bathing everything in a beautiful, golden hue.

The next day, the sun was shining brightly on the waters as I set off along the coast in search of the best beaches.

The blue shades of the Mallorcan sea are almost unreal, shifting from turquoise, sapphire, aquamarine to deep blue. Almost a mosaic of every shade of blue.

Cala Varques, one of the most unspoiled and virgin beaches on the east coast of Mallorca. You get a real sense of wildness here surrounded by cliffs and rocky caves.

After a delicious lunch in the port, I headed to the beach to dip my toes in the sea for the last time.

It looked like someone had sprinkled glitter all over the beach.

Perfect few days to kick back, relax and recharge batteries. Feeling rested, I headed south to meet a friend for a few days to explore Palma and stay in the most charming Castell Son Claret hotel surrounded by La Sierra de Tramontana mountains.

Mallorca, you have exceeded all my expectations. I will most certainly be back!
