Exploring Copenhagen

Last weekend, my girlfriend and I finally went on our long awaited weekend away to Copenhagen to explore the city, eat all things Danish and soak up the Christmas atmosphere.

Sadly, we picked the worst possible weekend as the weather was just dreadful - it rained and snowed the whole weekend and with a ghastly wind and sub zero temperature, it felt like we were in Siberia.

We checked into the Copenhagen Admiral Hotel, which used to be a warehouse. Back in days, the harbour was a bustling place and the warehouse was a focal point for the shipping trade not only for Denmark but the rest of the world.

The hotel has a rustic feel and with wooden beams, leather furniture and maritime ambience, it fits perfectly with its harbour location offering great views of The Copenhagen Opera House.

Breakfast was fantastic.
Fuelled up for the day ahead, we ventured out.

Due to the blistering wind, we didn't manage to see as much as we would have liked but we certainly didn't just sit around.

First stop was Nyhavn, a 17th-century stretch of colourful townhouses. Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived here too, and as a kid I used to love reading his beautiful fairy tales.

Despite getting soaked and turning into a life size popsicle, we soldiered on.....
Feeling utterly frozen, we stopped for a much needed hot chocolate.

La Glace is the oldest and one of the best confectionary in Denmark, and judging by our hefty bill of £15, probably the most expensive too! Our lovely waitress offered a free top up which made it all worth it.

Feeling warm(er), we headed to Rundetaarn, the 17th century round tower and the oldest functioning observatory in Europe. The views from there were spectacular!

All Eyes on Copenhagen!

We had dinner was at a very traditional Danish restaurant back in Nyhavn and chatted away until late at night excited about our next day activities. When you read all about it in my next post, you will understand why.
